Our Industrial Placement programme offers ambitious, capable under-graduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field. You’ll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference, these can range from supporting our various research teams through to our production operation.

Role Responsibilities

Research Roles

Providing experimental support across a range of projects, including

  • Conducting material characterisation measurements using AFM and Raman
  • Hall test measurements
  • Chemical exposure and heat tests
  • Manufacture of devices
  • Defect density measurements
  • Analysis of results and trends
  • Ad hoc experimental work

Presentation of results through completion of slides and verbal feedback at technology meetings

General upkeep of equipment and liaising along with facilities team for larger maintenance work

Ensuring communication flow of information across the project teams.

Technical research through the review of literature, and communication of findings.

Management of lab consumables, including stock inventory, ordering, distribution and contact with external suppliers

Completion of records of invention (ROI’s) and lessons learnt documentation.

Completion of standard operating procedures (SOP’s).

Completion of COSHH forms for new on-site chemicals.

Provide training to new joiners on equipment and experimental techniques.

 

Electronics or production roles:

Design experiments and collect and analyse process data to aid optimisation of equipment

Design, build & operate mechanical and electrical test systems

Rigorously test electronic devices and their designs including environmental, lifetime, EMC and safety testing

Undertake prototyping, test and debugging of designs and products using industry standard test equipment

Monitor all processes to prevent correct equipment malfunction

Take a thorough, hands-on experimental approach to trouble shooting problems and issues and help develop and progress solutions

Generate and implement test plans for projects and report on progress, findings and deliverables as well as provide recommendations for next steps.

Work with other teams to ensure projects progress to schedule

Closing date for applications is Monday 16th December with assessment days being held in January and February in anticipation for the successful individuals to join us for the summer.

Requirements

Undergraduate in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electronics Engineering and Computer Science.

Superb oral and written communication skills.

Must be proactive, organised, detail oriented and demonstrate accuracy and consistency

Ability to organise own workload.

Strong team player.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Strong Microsoft Office skills and experience

The placement will be fully integrated with your university requirements to ensure you gain the most value possible from your experience with us.
