Production Team Lead

Overview

Our client, a global innovator in the specialty materials industry, is seeking a dedicated Production Team Lead to join their team at the Chirnside Plant. This facility specialises in crafting top-tier heat-seal tea, coffee, and fibrous meat casing solutions, impacting consumers globally. With approximately 160 employees, they foster a culture of growth, teamwork, and care. Recently, they have invested in cutting-edge technology with a new production line and are looking for new talents to join their team.

Position Details

  • Location: Chirnside Plant, Scottish Borders
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, day shift, 37.5 hours per week
  • Contract: Permanent

A Production Team Lead supports the daily operations of production and manufacturing facilities for a given department. Working closely with production supervisors, they provide leadership and manage work teams while monitoring manufacturing and packaging procedures. Competitive salary depending on experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work Area Maintenance: Ensure work areas are always maintained to 5S standards.
  • Machine Supervision: Supervise machines in accordance with health and safety and environmental standards.
  • Performance Monitoring: Maintain and operate systems to monitor and control performance in critical areas such as safety, quality, environmental compliance, production volume, machine efficiencies, and utilisation.
  • Problem-Solving: Monitor production activity, identify process problems, troubleshoot causes, and develop solutions.
  • Production Restart: Ensure production is restarted safely and efficiently at web breaks, grade changes, and boil outs.
  • Target Achievement: Meet targets for volume, quality, efficiency, OEE, waste, and cost.
  • Product Conversion: Plan the efficient conversion of all 21 and 22 products.
  • Maintenance Liaison: Liaise with the engineering department to ensure maintenance requirements are organised and planned to maximise operational efficiency.
  • Quality Control: Ensure quality control procedures are implemented.
  • Continuous Improvement: Promote continuous improvement.
  • Performance Evaluations: Conduct performance evaluations of all directly reporting staff.
  • Corrective Actions: Implement corrective actions arising from customer complaints, customer audits, and ISO audits (external and internal).
  • Site Supervision: Oversee all site activities outside of working hours.
  • Reporting: Generate reports and maintain precise and accurate logs.
  • Employee Relations: Work closely with HR on employee relations (Return to Work, Time away from work, investigation into accidents, Occupational Health, Absence review meetings, and disciplinaries).

Other Responsibilities

  • Line Management Responsibility: Manage direct reports and ensure team efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Review processes and suggest improvement opportunities. Assist with the department's ongoing continuous improvement strategy.
  • Communication: Ensure effective 360º communication with employees at all organisational levels.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Desired)

  • Educational Background: Engineer Graduate or PhD degree preferably in papermaking, material science, chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, non-woven or textile technology.
  • Technical Expertise: Expertise in papermaking, or at least in one area related to nonwovens, polymer/fibre.
  • Experience: Some years of experience in related industries would be a plus.
  • Language Skills: Fluent in English.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work Environment: Ability to work in a busy environment.
  • Creativity: Creativity and technical capability to generate innovative ideas.
  • Problem-Solving: Judgment and ingenuity to solve non-routine problems.
  • Team Skills: Ability to both lead and participate on teams and in person.
