About the Role:

Verus Recruitment is supporting a client in their search for a skilled Character Artist. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented artist to create stunning and lifelike characters that enhance gameplay and storytelling. The ideal candidate will work closely with other artists, animators, and designers to produce high-quality character models, textures, and materials that align with the artistic vision and technical requirements of the game.

Role Overview:
As a Character Artist, you will be responsible for designing, modeling, and texturing characters that are visually appealing, expressive, and technically optimized for Unreal Engine. Your role will include creating realistic character models, ensuring that all character assets meet aesthetic and technical standards. This position requires strong artistic and technical skills, a deep understanding of human and creature anatomy, and a passion for creating memorable characters that enrich the game world.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and create high-quality character models, including textures and materials, for Unreal Engine.
  • Collaborate with concept artists and designers to bring character concepts to life.
  • Sculpt and model characters with attention to detail, realism, and artistic vision.
  • Create UV maps, textures, and materials to enhance character fidelity and performance.
  • Optimize character models for performance without sacrificing visual quality.
  • Ensure that all character assets are fully riggable and ready for animation.
  • Conduct quality checks and iterate on character assets based on feedback from team members.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and techniques in character modeling and texturing.
  • Maintain technical documentation and organize character asset files.
  • Work closely with the technical team to ensure seamless integration with gameplay mechanics.
  • Troubleshoot issues with character models and textures as they arise.
  • Participate in creative brainstorming sessions, offering ideas to enhance character design.
  • Maintain and update a library of character assets as needed.
Requirements:
  • 4+ years in a Character Art role in a games studio.
  • Proven experience as a Character Artist, with a portfolio showcasing character models and textures.
  • Proficiency in character modeling, texturing, and material creation.
  • Strong skills in industry-standard software, such as ZBrush, Maya, Blender, and Substance Painter.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine, including shaders, materials, and asset integration.
  • Solid understanding of human and creature anatomy and proportions.
  • Strong artistic ability with an eye for detail, form, and texture.
  • Knowledge of character rigging and animation pipelines is a plus.
  • Experience optimizing character models for performance and memory usage.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to take constructive feedback.
  • Organizational skills to manage files, assets, and documentation efficiently.
  • Familiarity with character LODs (Levels of Detail) and optimization techniques.
  • Ability to adapt to new tools, workflows, and technology.
